Social Networking and Communications

Social networking : Groups of people with common interests, or like-minds, associate together on social-networking sites and build relationships through community. An act of engagement.

Social media: A way to transmit or share information with a broad audience. Everyone has the opportunity to create and distribute. All that is really needed is an internet connection! YouTube is a good example.

Web 2.0 tools : A term associated with web applications that facilitate participatory information sharing, user-centred activity and collaboration on the Internet.

Characteristics of Web 2.0

  • Web-based applications can be accessed from anywhere.
  • Simple applications solve specific problems.
  • Value lies in content, not the technology used to display it.
  • Data can be readily shared.
  • Distribution is bottom-up, not top-down.
  • Students and educators can access and use tools on their own.
  • Social tools encourage people to create, collaborate, edit, categorize, exchange and promote information.
  • Networking is encouraged; the more people who contribute, the better the content gets.
